Eighteen-year-old Harper Deacon has never been a rebel. She’s always been a rule-follower who goes along to get along. Until she does the one thing her mother asked her not to do. When she bails on college to pursue her dream of becoming a musician, her mom kicks her out and she moves into the house she inherited from her granddad.

Smith Dalton doesn’t follow the rules. He bends them to his own needs. After driving off the lead singer of the indie rock band he recently joined, Smith talks Harper into being the band’s new lead singer.

Sounds like the perfect plan. But Harper has her doubts. Joining a band with three guys? She’s never even had guy friends before. Spending a lot of time with a certain guitar player who is too good-looking, too cool, and too much of everything? That could get complicated. Especially when the guy is a player who just hooks up and moves on. The last thing Harper needs is to fall for a guy who will only break her heart.

Music is her number one priority and she has every intention of staying focused on what really matters. But, as Harper is finding out, being in a band is about more than just the music. And sometimes, what you think you want and what you really need are two very different things.

Harper Deacon wants nothing more than to follow her dream.  So, even with the road ahead filled with unknowns, she takes matters into her own hands and moves forward.  And along that journey she faces the highest highs and the lowest lows.  She loses family, finds friends, and discovers love.  This story will capture your imagination, engage your heart, and have you on the edge of your seat.

There are some twists in this story that I didn’t see coming, and some that I suspected might happen.  Of course, I won’t share these here as I feel they’re important to making this story what it is.  I think you should experience these for yourself.  However, I must tell you about Smith.  When Harper meets Smith, she quickly realizes (as we all do) that he’s pretty special.  He’s a smart, sexy, and fun bad boy.  He brings lots of joy, and a ton of complication, to Harper’s life.  But, together, these two are strong.  They push each other to the edge and they support each other when it’s needed.  I loved their push and pull…and, ultimately, their romance.  And, I would have loved to read some of this story from Smith’s POV.  I know it would have rounded out the story even more for me.

There are some great secondary characters here.  The guys in the band as so supportive of each other and such well developed characters that they could easily have books of their own.  These guys were great and their friendship felt so real and I enjoyed reading the interactions between the entire cast in this story.  The end of this book caught me off guard, however.  It’s not a cliffhanger but, in reality, it didn’t feel like an ending either.  I’m hoping there’s a second book that gives us the opportunity to check in on Harper and Smith so that I can make sure that all my hopes for them become reality.  Overall, this was a good read with great writing and wonderful characters.  This was a very good debut novel and I look forward to reading more from this author.
